Lock'n'Chase (C64)
A downloadable game
This game is the C64 port of Lock'n'Chase, an arcade game developed by DECO in 1981.
The game runs perfectly on both PAL and NTSC models of the Commodore 64.
Gameplay
The protagonist of the game is a thief named Lupin. The aim of the game is to enter a vault and collect all the coins and, if possible, any other treasure that may appear. The thief must then exit the vault without being apprehended by the Super Ds (cops). The thief can close doors within the maze to temporarily prevent the cops from advancing and allow him to keep his distance from them. Only two doors can be closed at a time. The thief can dodge the police by running through the open side doors. When he exits through one side, he quickly enters on the other side. The Super D cops are called Stiffy, Scaredy, Smarty and Silly.
The coins are worth 20 points each. In each level, money bags randomly appear in the center of the maze. Money bags are worth 500, 1000, 2000 and up to 4000 points respectively each time they are collected. Each level also has a specific treasure that appears near the center of the maze whose value varies from 100 to 5000 points. If the cops are trapped between two doors in the upper right or lower left corners of the vault, the player earns extra points (100, 300, 1000 or 2000 depending on the number of trapped cops).
The player earns extra lives based on the scores shown in the following table:
Difficulty level | First life at | Subsequent lives every |
Easy | 15000 | 30000 |
Normal | 15000 | 35000 |
Hard | 15000 | 40000 |
Expert | 20000 | 45000 |
A maximum of 5 lives can be accumulated.

I just about remember playing the original on the Arcade a long time ago. This game is a fantastic recreation on the C64. Some people might look at this game and think another Pacman clone but it offers much more. Pacman is ok, this is awesome. Love the different difficulty levels and high scores. Thanks very much for making such a great game! Also love the other C64 games you've done - very polished and enjoyable to play.
I am very happy with your positive opinion about my games, thank you!
One of my favorites on the Intellivision, so it's nice to play a version of it on the C64. Thank you for your efforts! Does this version follow the arcade version? I noticed a few differences between it and the INTV version; most noticeable is where you get points for trapping the cops and that you cannot move while the cops are frozen after you grab the center loot bonus. Never-the-less, nicely done!
Thank you so much for enjoying the game!
I noticed that the Intellivision version is a little different, in fact I based the game as much as possible on the arcade version.
Yes, I kind of figured that was the "source material". I've never played the arcade machine, but that's not taking away any enjoyment for me regarding your version of the game. Everything is always compared to your "first love". ;)
Good game and fun to play, thank you. I also added that to my New Games On C64 from March 2024 -video too.
Thanks for the video and for appreciating. :)
Once again a very nice game that reminded me a lot of “Mouse Trap” from CBS Colecovision. Our German-language review can be found in our recorded livestream starting at 00:40:47. English subtitles are also available this time (switch on, if necessary). 🙂
Thanks, as usual. The english subtitles are there.
One more thing that I noticed during the review and didn't mention here. Apparently the character only reacts if you steer the joystick strictly in the respective direction. But if use both directions (top right, bottom left, etc.) as usual, it doesn't work.
When moving the joystick diagonally, the priority direction is horizontal, so if you are moving vertically and move the joystick diagonally, the character will move horizontally, but vice versa it doesn't work. However, consider that the original arcade version uses a 4-way joystick and therefore the diagonal is not foreseen.
Thank you for the clarification! 👍
I initially thought it was a bug.
Amazing port!! well done
Happy u like it, thanx!
Awesome version Luca ! A lot of thanks.
Thanks for the video, as usual!
Luca, insisto!!!
Purtroppo ti devo ripetere che ho già in mente diversi altri progetti. Inoltre dovrei anche tenere in considerazione la seguente lista delle richieste: H.E.R.O. (diverse richieste), Popeye, Jr. Pac-Man, Pac-Man, Pacman Championship Edition, Mappy, Time Pilot, Time Pilot '84, Elevator Action, Wizard of Wor, Battle City, Skizofrenia.
Thank you for another gem!
Glad you like it!
A very cool game.
Thanks again for the video!
You are unstoppable. Amazing! May I ask what kind of development tools you use for this game including the assembler?
Thanks for liking!
For all my games I used C64Studio, a cross-assembler that runs on Windows, and VICE.
I use the same C64 Studio from Georg Rottensteiner.
Good choice!
thanks,very good game
Glad you appreciate!
Awesome! https://c64universe.wordpress.com/2024/03/02/locknchase-2024-lc-games/
Thanks!
You are talented enough to make an improved version of Wizard of Wor or better Battle City clone for Commodore 64 than https://c64universe.wordpress.com/2023/12/08/battlot-2021-inufuto/.
I've put these two games on my want list but I doubt I'll ever find the time to make them.
Thank you for your work so far, and if it happens, I think you'll be a fantastic success with these two titles as well.
A very good conversion of a classic from Arcade ✌️😎 Of course, as editors of K&A PLUS we will do a review of this game for the latest issue ✌️😎
Thanks a lot, as usual!
